About the Society
The Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society has its roots in the formation of a library in 1797, when Chief Justice Thomas Strange donated his personal collection to the province for the use of his fellow lawyers. Although a Library for the benefit of barristers existed from 1797, it was not until 1825 that a formal association was established with the formation of the Society of Nova Scotia Barristers.
The Society sets and enforces standards of professional responsibility and ethics for lawyers. These address both the standards for admission and the expectations for practising lawyers. This is supplemented by providing education and guidance for our members through programs, courses and communications, as well as extensive tools to assist lawyers in maintaining and enhancing their competence.
