New Client ID Regulations
The Society's new Client Identification and Verification Regulations, which came into effect on November 3, 2008, was amended April 24, 2009. They outline the steps lawyers must take, and the records they must keep, to verify client identity.
The next round of annual reporting by firms and lawyers to the Society will include questions about compliance with these new regulations, which were developed from the new Client Identification Rule adopted by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.
To assist in the transition, the Society has drafted a Sample Verification Agreement (MS Word template) that you may wish to copy and modify. Our comprehensive list of FAQs is also very helpful, and will be updated as issues arise.
